Detective Inspector Liz Darby: “You also have Joan, and that makes you vulnerable.”

Jack Darby: “No. That makes me tougher.”

“Darby and Joan” returned for its second series, bringing back the unlikely duo of retired detective Jack Darby (Bryan Brown) and British nurse Joan Kirkhope (Greta Scacchi) as they navigate the picturesque, yet surprisingly perilous, Australian outback. The first series established a charming premise: two individuals, each on their own journey of self-discovery and escape, coincidentally finding themselves solving mysteries while exploring the vast landscape. Series 2 largely continues this winning formula, while also attempting to delve a little deeper into the characters’ personal lives and the overarching mystery that connects them.

The heart of “Darby and Joan” remains the chemistry and dynamic between Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi. Brown’s portrayal of Jack Darby is effortlessly laconic, his gruff exterior often belying a sharp mind and a surprising warmth. He delivers his lines with a dry wit that perfectly captures the essence of the seasoned, slightly world-weary detective. Scacchi, as Joan, is equally compelling. Her character is a delightful blend of British politeness and burgeoning resilience, a woman gradually shedding the constraints of her past and embracing adventure. Their evolving relationship, filled with understated affection, mutual respect, and a good dose of playful banter, is a joy to watch. It’s not about grand romantic gestures, but about the quiet companionship and understanding that builds between two people who truly see and appreciate each other. This genuine connection elevates the series beyond a simple procedural.

Each episode in Series 2, much like the first, largely presents a standalone mystery, often tied to the unique characters and small communities Darby and Joan encounter on their travels. From peculiar disappearances to suspicious deaths, the cases are generally well-constructed, offering enough twists and turns to keep viewers engaged without becoming overly complex. The charm lies in how Darby’s investigative instincts and Joan’s keen observations (and sometimes accidental blunders) combine to unravel the truth.

What distinguishes Series 2 is a more pronounced attempt to weave the individual episodic mysteries into the larger tapestry of Joan’s quest to understand her husband’s death. This overarching narrative, which was somewhat sidelined in the first series, gains more prominence here, adding a layer of emotional depth and intrigue. While some might find the resolution of this central mystery a little too neat or perhaps not as impactful as the build-up suggests, it certainly provides a stronger backbone for the season.

Just as in the first series, the Australian landscape is arguably the third main character. Series 2 continues to showcase the breathtaking beauty and diversity of the country, from sun-drenched coastal towns to dusty outback roads and quirky, isolated settlements. The cinematography is excellent, capturing the vastness and the unique character of each location. This visual appeal is more than just a backdrop; it’s integral to the show’s identity, reflecting the characters’ journey and the sense of exploration. The road trip element remains strong, offering a delightful sense of discovery with each new setting.

While “Darby and Joan” Series 2 is an enjoyable watch, it’s not without its minor imperfections. Some of the individual mysteries, while entertaining, can feel a tad predictable at times, or rely on conveniences to move the plot forward. The pacing, while generally relaxed and fitting for the genre, might feel a bit slow for viewers accustomed to more fast-paced procedurals. Additionally, as mentioned, the resolution of Joan’s personal mystery, while satisfying in its own way, could have perhaps carried more emotional weight given the anticipation built throughout both seasons.

“Darby and Joan” Series 2 is a comforting and engaging return for fans of the first season. It successfully capitalizes on the undeniable chemistry of its lead actors, offers a pleasant array of episodic mysteries, and continues to highlight the stunning Australian scenery. While it doesn’t dramatically reinvent the wheel, it subtly deepens the character arcs and provides a more cohesive narrative throughline. It’s a gentle, character-driven mystery series that offers both escapism and a touch of genuine human connection. If you enjoyed the first series, you’ll find plenty to appreciate in this charming continuation. It’s perfect viewing for those who enjoy a leisurely pace, compelling characters, and a beautiful backdrop to their crime-solving adventures.
